Many new players who are just getting into pickleball get confused by the layers on the handle the first time they try to replace accessories, wondering exactly which layer is the grip tape and which is the replacement grip. A lot of people tear off the thick factory-installed layer directly, wrap a new grip tape on, only to find the handle is too thin to hold properly — this is a common pitfall caused by failing to tell the two apart. In fact, as long as you carefully distinguish them from three dimensions: installation position, thickness and function, even someone who touches a pickleball paddle for the first time can tell them apart.
The replacement grip is the layer directly fixed to the base of the pickleball paddle handle, which is the original accessory that comes with the paddle out of the factory. It is significantly thicker than the outer adhesive layer, most of its surface has fine anti-slip textures, and some models even have built-in shock-absorbing cushions. Its core function is to wrap the internal base material of the paddle, isolating sweat, dust and moisture, preventing the wooden handle core from getting moldy after long-term exposure to sweat. Under normal use, it does not need frequent replacement. As long as there is no large-area damage, chipping or severe odor, it can be kept on the paddle handle all the time. Many new players tear off the original replacement grip as soon as they get the paddle, which instead exposes the handle directly to sweat. Before long, the handle will slip and the inner part will become loose, shortening the service life of the paddle.
The commonly mentioned grip tape, also known as an overgrip, is the accessory wrapped around the outer layer of the replacement grip, which you need to buy and wrap by yourself. Its overall thickness is much thinner than the replacement grip. Most of the common pickleball-specific grip tapes on the market are made of high-elastic PU material, with anti-slip or sticky feature, and their length is specially optimized for the relatively short handle of pickleball paddles. The grip tape is the part that directly contacts the palm. Its core function is to absorb the sweat generated during exercise, increase the friction between the palm and the paddle, prevent slipping and the paddle flying out when hitting the ball, and at the same time buffer part of the recoil force from hitting, improving the comfort of holding the paddle for a long time. Since it is in direct contact with sweat and subject to frequent friction, the grip tape is a consumable that needs regular replacement. Generally, after 3 to 5 consecutive uses, the surface will reach sweat saturation and its anti-slip performance will decrease. At this time, you need to replace it with a new grip tape to ensure the stability of holding the paddle.

After figuring out the difference between the replacement grip and the grip tape, daily use and maintenance will become much easier. Normally, you only need to replace the outer grip tape regularly to maintain a dry, non-slip grip. Just tear off the grip tapes every one or two months, and let the inner replacement grip fully air dry for a few hours. This can prevent moisture from accumulating between the two layers and extend the service life of the replacement grip. The combination of replacement grip and grip tape can not only adjust the thickness of the handle, but also prevent sweat from penetrating directly to the paddle, making the overall grip feel more comfortable. By replacing the grip tape regularly, you do not need to frequently replace the more expensive replacement grip, which is much more cost-effective.
