How to use and maintain an overgrip? May 30, 2025
In ball sports such as tennis, badminton, and table tennis, overgrips may seem inconspicuous, yet they play a pivotal role. They not only enhance the comfort of gripping the racket, reducing hand fatigue, but also to a certain extent affect an athlete's performance. However, many people have misconceptions about using and maintaining overgrips, leading to premature damage or a decline in their performance. Below is a detailed introduction to the precautions for using overgrips and the maintenance methods after use. Precautions for Using Overgrips 1.Choose the Right OvergripDifferent sports have different requirements for the performance of overgrips. For instance, in tennis, where the rackets are relatively large and the force of hitting the ball is strong, overgrips need to have good anti-slip properties and sweat absorption to cope with the heavy perspiration during intense matches. Badminton demands high flexibility, so overgrips should be thinner, lighter, and softer to facilitate quick changes in grip positions by athletes. Table tennis is a fast-paced sport, and overgrips must ensure a stable grip without affecting the wrist's flexible movement. At the same time, personal hand characteristics should be considered. People with larger hands can opt for slightly wider overgrips, while those with sweaty hands should choose materials with strong sweat absorption, such as towel overgrips. 2.Wrap the Overgrip CorrectlyFirst, determine the starting position of the overgrip, usually from the bottom of the racket handle. When wrapping, maintain an appropriate tightness. If it's too tight, the overgrip will lose its elasticity and affect the grip feel; if it's too loose, it will slide easily, reducing the anti-slip effect. Wrap in the direction of the handle's grain to better fit the handle and minimize the gap between the overgrip and the handle. There should be a certain overlap between each turn of the overgrip to avoid gaps, with an overlap of 2 - 3 millimeters being ideal. When reaching the top of the handle, secure the end with special tape or the built-in fixing tape of the overgrip to prevent it from unraveling. 3.Replace the Overgrip in a Timely MannerDuring use, overgrips will gradually wear out, get dirty, and lose their original performance. There are three situations where the overgrip needs to be replaced promptly. First, when the overgrip shows obvious wear, with a rough and uneven surface that affects grip comfort. Second, when the overgrip becomes very dirty and difficult to clean, leading to bacterial growth. Third, when the overgrip loses its elasticity, becomes soft and flabby, and can no longer provide sufficient anti-slip effect. In general, it is appropriate to replace the overgrip every 1 - 3 weeks, depending on the frequency of exercise and personal perspiration. Maintenance Methods After Using Overgrips 1.Daily CleaningAfter each exercise session, the overgrip should be cleaned promptly. For regular PU overgrips, gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove sweat stains and dust. If the overgrip is very dirty, dip it in a small amount of mild detergent, gently rub it, then rinse it thoroughly with clean water, and finally use a clean towel to absorb the moisture. Towel overgrips can be rinsed directly with clean water, but be careful not to rub them excessively to avoid damaging the towel fibers. 2.Air-Dry NaturallyAfter cleaning, do not expose the overgrip to direct sunlight or dry it with a hairdryer, as this can cause it to deform and harden, affecting its service life. Instead, place the overgrip in a well-ventilated, cool, and dry place to air-dry naturally. If time permits, remove the overgrip from the racket handle to dry it, as this can remove moisture more quickly and prevent the overgrip from molding due to prolonged moisture on the handle. 3.Store ProperlyAfter air-drying, store the overgrip properly to avoid exposure to moisture, pressure, or high temperatures. You can place the overgrip in a dry, sealed bag or box to prevent dust and moisture from entering. If it will not be used for a long time, put some desiccants, such as silica gel desiccants, in the sealed bag or box to further absorb moisture. At the same time, avoid placing the overgrip together with sharp objects to prevent scratching its surface. Overgrips can protect rackets and play a crucial role in ball sports. If used and maintained properly, they can bring us a better sports experience. Hope everyone can master these usage and maintenance tips to keep the overgrips in good condition and accompany us in sweating it out on the court.
