If your hands tend to stay dry with only a light sheen of sweat, a flat overgrip will actually give you better shot feedback. Let's break down the differences between the two overgrip. A flat overgrip is made of PU material with a smooth, even surface. Its biggest advantage is direct feel transfer — every subtle change in finger pressure gets passed to the racket face without any loss. For players who prioritize precise shot control, a flat overgrip is the better fit. It is also easier to wrap, making it more forgiving for beginners. But its weakness is equally obvious: it has poor moisture management. Once your palms start sweating, a thin film of water forms on the surface, the overgrip begins to slip, and you lose control of the racket. This can seriously disrupt your rhythm. A keel overgrip, on the other hand, features a raised ridge running along the surface. That ridge is not there for decoration — it is designed to channel sweat away. When your palms sweat, the moisture flows along the grooves on either side of the ridge instead of pooling into a slippery film between your hand and the overgrip. So no matter how long you play or how much you sweat, the friction stays within a controllable range. The trade-off is that the ridge sits between your fingers and the handle, which slightly reduces the finesse of your touch. This makes keel overgrip less ideal for players who rely on finger flicks to disguise shots or fine-tune shot placement. So here is the bottom line: if you have light sweating and value precise feel, go with a flat overgrip. If you sweat heavily and prioritize a stable hold, go with a keel overgrip. If your sweating is moderate and you are not sure which camp you fall into, there is a simple test: start with a flat overgrip, and after one game, feel the surface. If it is damp but you can still hold on, the flat overgrip is fine for you. If it is so slippery that you need to stop mid-game to wipe your hands, you are better off with a keel overgrip. Finally, no matter which type you choose, remember that overgrips are consumables — replace them when it is time. Change your overgrip regularly to make sure it performs at its best.
